The story of Stokes begins in the bustling streets of Philadelphia in the late 19th century. After graduating from Haverford College, Frances J. Stokes served as an apprentice to renowned machinist Robert Shoemaker. In 1895, he purchased the machine firm from Shoemaker and renamed it the F.J. Stokes Machine Company.
